All photographic prints sold by London Editions are supplied unframed. In order to help you mount and frame your purchase we have produced the following short guide.
Mounting
Before your print is framed, your local framer will mount your print with a suitable sized mount. The mount is the cardboard that separates the frame from the print (also known as a mat). The mount will ensure all eyes are drawn to the artwork and also helps separate the image from the background wall. We recommend using a white mount, however a striking effect can be achieved by using a black mount when mounting certain black and white photographs.
However you decide to mount your print, the bottom margin is generally slightly wider than the top to give the entire image a visual weight. The sides should equal the dimensions of the top margin. Standard margin sizes are 3″ to 4″ inches on the bottom and 3″ at the top and sides, however these will vary proportionally according to the size of the print.
(Please note: Only our 7×5 prints are supplied mounted, we will however quote for matting/mounting of larger images to fit standard frame sizes upon request.)
Framing
When choosing a frame for your print, you will need to consider the moulding material, size and colour. Traditionally, black and white photography is framed with a thin black aluminium frame, but ultimately you should choose what pleases you and suits your style. Light-stained wood frames can also be highly attractive options when framing black and white prints. Similarly white wooden frames are often used when framing colour photographs in contemporary galleries.
Always ensure the print has room to breathe, too chunky a frame, or too thin a mount, will ultimately mean the print will be overwhelmed by it’s framing. It is also recommended to chose a frame and mount that will enhance the print itself rather than the room, so that if you move, redecorate, or decide to hang the piece in another location, it will always look appropriate.
For best results, we always suggest you visit your local custom framers, who will be able to offer an abundance of advice and expertise on framing your purchase.

Hanging
The standard or gallery height to hang a picture is with the centre of the picture at the eye level of an average person. This is around 63 inches or 1.60 metres. However when hanging a number of prints on the same wall offsetting some at different heights (and choosing a range of frame sizes) can be highly effective.
Always remember to move prints around occasionally to change the amount and direction of light exposure, and be careful not to hang works in direct sunlight, under bright lamps or near heat sources.

Alternatives to framing
We are now able to offer a number of alternatives to traditional framing. In addition to our range of canvas prints, we can also supply our prints mounted onto 12mm MDF blocks (ready to hang), and mounted between onto perspex panels. These alternative finishes are particularly suited to contemporary environments. Please email us for a bespoke quote.
